Ironically, I find steel to be quite flexible and forgiving as a material to work with. I came to metalwork just a few years ago and love the way steel can be shaped, merged or amended with found objects, changed and manipulated. The process is engrossing and challenging physically.
I am fascinated with birds, and see them daily where I live near the ocean. The first birds I made were needle felted and from tin cans. The steel birds are the beginning of a series I hope to make of different birds I’ve seen or see on a regular basis. Birds' homes are another fascination to me. Old tools and other metal objects are often the starting point for me, and I have begun to incorporate stone and granite into some of my other work. The steel and stone sculptures play with the ideas of whimsy and solidity, motion and stillness.
